Report into Mt Isa lead levels out today

QUEENSLAND Health will today release the results of lead testing on children in the north-west Queensland town of Mt Isa.

The results are expected to show that at least 45 of the 400 children (11 per cent) who underwent blood screening had lead levels above World Health Organisation Standard.

It is feared the high lead levels could impair their behavioural and intellectual development.

The results are expected to be revealed at a media conference involving Health Minister Stephen Robertson at midday ahead of a public meeting this evening.

The family of six-year-old Stella Hare last month lodged a claim for unspecified damages against Mt Isa Mines parent company Xstrata, Mt Isa City Council and the Queensland government over lead levels found in her body.

The girl's lawyer has warned other families will lodge claims shortly.

Former Mt Isa Shire Council environmental health officer Ted Prickett yesterday revealed he warned authorities of high lead levels but council bosses had ignored his findings.

"I think they did not want to do anything that might affect Mt Isa Mines Limited to be honest," he told Network Ten.

"I don't believe you can just sweep it under the carpet I think it's wrong and this should stop."
